Water Conservation

Saving Water Can Save Money

Did you know that over 50% of landscape water may be wasted due to overwatering, inefficient watering practices and broken or poorly maintained irrigation systems? With hot, dry summers becoming the norm in our region, it’s important that everyone does their part to conserve limited water supplies. We encourage customers to take advantage of the following tools, tips and resources to help save water and manage your monthly water bill.

  • Know and follow your watering schedule. The City of Aledo has year-round requirements in place – consistent with other communities across North Texas.
  • Avoid daytime watering. Only water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to minimize evaporation.
  • Sign up for free Weekly Watering Advice and view other conservation resources at www.waterisawesome.com. You’ll receive recommendations based on actual precipitation received in our area.
  • Register for My Water Advisor to monitor how much you’re watering and when. You can even receive leak alerts! Check out this demonstration video for detailed instructions on registering and accessing your account.
  • Check and update your sprinklers. Look for leaks, broken heads or heads spraying patios, the street or driveways. Use this EPA WaterSense checklist!
  • Apply no more than an inch of water to your lawn per week during the summer. That will encourage deeper root systems and healthier grass.
  • Turn off sprinklers when it’s rainy or windy. Watch the forecast and turn off the irrigation system.
  • Cycle and soak. Instead of one long watering session, water in a couple short cycles (5-6 minutes each) with an hour in between.
  • Estimate your irrigation usage with Fort Worth Water’s calculator tool. One minute of watering in one station or zone applies approximately 15 gallons of water to your landscape. The calculator shows how the gallons can add up quickly with longer watering times per station running multiple days a week.
  • Add a smart controller. It automatically adjusts your sprinkler system based on weather and watering restrictions.
  • View an Irrigation 101 Workshop taught by a regional AgriLife expert. Watch other conservation videos produced by Save Tarrant Water.
  • Have a licensed irrigation professional evaluate your system and make recommendations to save water.
  • Consider native Texas plants for your landscape that can be more drought-tolerant and adapted better to soil conditions in our area.
  • Compost and mulch to retain moisture around trees, bushes and flower beds. Taller grass holds moister better and slows evaporation.
