Lead in Drinking Water

Lead in Drinking Water

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently made revisions to strengthen the Lead and Copper Rule to further keep communities safe from lead in drinking water by taking steps to remove lead from drinking water. One new requirement is that an inventory of all service lines must completed by all water utilities throughout the United States.

The City of Aledo has been and continues to be committed to providing clean and safe drinking water free from lead. This inventory is an important step in protecting public health and minimizing the risk of lead entering your drinking water from fittings and fixtures in your home.

Water Service Line Inventory

The service line is the pipe that runs from the water main to the point the pipe enters the residence or building. Ownership is usually shared by the City and the property owner. The City owns the portion from the water main to the water meter, including the water meter. The property owner owns the portion from the meter to the point where it enters the residence or building.

City personnel has developed an inventory of both city- and customer-owned service lines. The complete inventory of all lines in the City of Aledo’s service area is available for the public to review at City Hall, 104 Maverick Street, Aledo, Texas 76008.

There is No Action Required on Your Part

If your home has lead or copper service lines, they will be identified by City of Aledo employees and you will be notified. There is no action needed.

I Received A Letter Stating My Service Line Is "Unknown"?

The vast majority of the city's public and private service lines are non-lead. There are a few unknown material service lines remaining that we are actively working to discover the material. If you are among those with an unknown material, the EPA requires us to treat the unknowns as "possible lead". This means that you will receive a letter in the mail from us with information about steps to take to discover your material type and protect yourself and your family from lead.
